Volunteers from the Mt. Vernon Adventist Helping Hands Ministry, (a Ministry of Adventist Community Services), help to serve those in need within the community. We have our meetings the third Sabbath of every month after church services to discuss ongoing projects and also new ideas. We are a small group from a small church, but we do what we can to try and make a difference in our commuinities.

  • The soup kitchen which is located at the Friendship of Faith Church, (at the Intersection of 12th Street & Bell), in Mt. Vernon IL. is one of the many ways we help the community. The volunteers from the Ministry serve barbeque chicken, potato salad, green beans, desert, rolls & drinks on the Second Friday of each month from 4pm to 6pm.
  • We also do food pantry bags which are taken down to the soup kitchen. We usually make up 10 bags and try to get them there the last two weeks of the month. Included in these bags are sharing books to not only give them physical nourishment but spiritual nourishment as well.
  • Every Spring our Ministry collects stuffed animals, etc. to give to the Mt.Vernon Police Department and the Justice Center for the officers to take with them when they have to go into a home where domestic violence requires them to remove a child, or in a stressful situation involving children. They also give them to the children visiting a parent in jail. We usually do this project after Valentines and Easter, and we deliver them at the end of April or the first of May.
  • Our fall project is “Back to School Supplies” which are distributed to the local schools. We usually start at the end of July and go through to the end of August.
  • Our winter project involves collecting mittens, gloves, scarves, and hats for school kids who need them in the local schools. This usually begins around October or November and goes on until mid December or the end of December.
  • Over the years we have also donated items to the Baptist run home for unwed mothers, and abused women.

Anyone interested in becoming a part of our ministry is more than welcome to join us. You do not have to be an Adventist to be a part of our ministry.
